Verona Ann Bertrand, a beloved member of the Mamou community, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 13, 2025, at the age of 75. Verona was born on Thursday, December 8, 1949, in Mamou, Louisiana and was known for her resilience, dedication, and free spirit that touched the lives of many throughout her journey.
Verona’s career was marked by her pioneering spirit as she worked at the Dupont Plant in Texas for 12 years, where she broke barriers as the only female employee at the facility. Her professional journey continued as she served as a packer and shipper at Jansen's in Eunice and later made a significant impact at Mamou Elementary School as a worker in the cafeteria then she transitioned to the role of paraprofessional, where her straight forward approach influenced countless young lives before her retirement.
Outside of her professional endeavors, Verona cherished her cultural roots, enjoying French music, especially at Fred's Lounge, where she often gathered with friends. She took great joy in speaking French with her family and friends, celebrating her heritage with warmth and enthusiasm.
Verona is survived by her son, Linzy Bertrand of Cheneyville; her sister, Judy Thibodeaux of Baton Rouge; and her nephews, Bryan Thibodeaux of Baton Rouge and Eric Thibodeaux of Ponchatoula. She was preceded in death by her parents, Allison and Verlie Fontenot Bertrand.
