Obituary

With profound sadness and immense gratitude for a life well lived, the family of Terry James  Manuel, affectionately known as "Chief," announces his peaceful passing on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at the age of 78.

Born on February 8, 1948, in Mamou, Louisiana, Terry lived a life defined by honor, service, dedication, and unwavering love for his family. He was a man of remarkable character whose accomplishments were many, but whose greatest source of pride was always the people he loved.

A proud patriot, Terry courageously answered the call to serve his country during the Vietnam War as a member of the United States Marine Corps. Wounded in combat, he was awarded the Purple Heart, a lasting testament to his bravery, sacrifice, and devotion to the nation he proudly served.

Following his military service, Terry pursued higher education, earning his Bachelor's Degree in English from the University of Southwestern Louisiana before obtaining his Juris Doctor from Louisiana State University Law School. He devoted more than three decades to the Calcasieu Parish District Attorney's Office, where he faithfully served as an Assistant District Attorney. Throughout his distinguished legal career, Terry earned the respect of colleagues, judges, and countless members of the community through his integrity, wisdom, and commitment to justice, with much of his career dedicated to civil law.

Outside the courtroom, Terry embraced life with enthusiasm. An avid jogger for many years, he also enjoyed swimming at the YMCA and spent countless hours enjoying his extensive music collection. His colorful personality was unmistakable, and he became well known for his collection of bright Hawaiian shirts that reflected his joyful spirit and infectious smile.

Of all his accomplishments, Terry considered none greater than his family. His love for them was steadfast, unconditional, and evident in every aspect of his life. He treasured every moment spent with them, creating memories that will forever remain in their hearts.

Even in passing, Terry continued his lifelong example of generosity by giving the gift of life as a LOPA organ donor, leaving behind one final legacy of hope.

He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 32 years, Donna Clark Manuel; his son and godchild, Joe Vidrine and wife Sandra; his son, Kevin Fuselier and wife Katie; his daughter, Tammy Meier and husband Steve; his cherished grandchildren, Myles, Mason, Eric, Brent, Kara, and Kylie; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family members, dear friends, colleagues, and all whose lives were enriched by knowing him.

He was welcomed into eternal rest by his parents, Willix Manuel and Ola Savant Manuel; his brother, Revonel Vidrine; his sister, Linda Manuel; his beloved granddaughter, Magan Meier; and Asa Vidrine.

Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation on Thursday, July 2, 2026 at beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.  A Celebration of Life honoring Terry's remarkable life will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Ardoin's Funeral Home in Mamou.  In keeping with Terry's vibrant personality and at the request of his family, guests are encouraged to wear their favorite bright Hawaiian shirt as a joyful tribute to the man who never met a stranger and whose colorful spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, Marine, attorney, and friend, Terry James "Chief" Manuel leaves behind a legacy of courage, compassion, laughter, and unwavering service. Though he will be deeply missed, his life remains an enduring inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
