Mamou – A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Howard Joseph Deculus on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at 2:00 PM at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Mamou, Louisiana conducted by Father Billy Massie. Burial will follow in the New St. Ann’s Cemetery. Howard passed away surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, July 16, 2023, at his home.
Howard was born on September 3, 1947, in Mamou to the late Ashton Deculus Sr. and Ester Gradney Deculus. After graduating high school, he married the love of his life, Janice Patin. Howard began working on the family farm at an early age and continued to farm rice, beans, milo, and crawfish until 1995 before retiring. Upon retiring he figured out he didn’t have very many hobbies besides working and decided to go to work as a Security Guard for Grand Casino Coushatta where he worked an additional 21 years. He also worked part-time for Farmers’ Gas on his days off from the casino. Howard’s family lovingly remembers him as someone who was always working and when he was not working, he was thinking about work that needed to be done. He took great pride in having a well-maintained yard. Once Howard was no longer able to perform the task required to maintain a well-kept home and yard, he would supervise from inside the house watching things getting done through the screen door. He took up rose gardening in his later years and found a new passion. In the evenings Howard enjoyed sipping his Canadian Mist from his favorite coffee mug.
