MAMOU - It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Elvin “Vin” Fontenot, a beloved member of the Mamou community, on Monday, June 17, 2024. Elvin was a stalwart figure, serving his country as an United States Army Veteran and later dedicating himself to the protection of his community as the esteemed Police Chief of Mamou. His commitment to duty and service to others epitomized his character and left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Born on December 7, 1925, in Mamou, LA, Elvin Fontenot led a life filled with purpose and dedication. His strong sense of honor and unwavering loyalty endeared him to many, earning him respect and admiration throughout his lifetime. Vin was elected Chief on Mamou without opposition in both the Democratic Primary in 1969 and the general election in 1970, where he served the community for 12 consecutive years.
Elvin's love for the simple pleasures in life, such as enjoying a good cigar and his daily “rip” through town for his cup of coffee, reflected his appreciation for life's small joys.
Elvin is survived by his beloved nieces and nephews, Stephanie, Chad, Judy, Pam, Sherry, Jane, Janice, Barbara, Sybil, Charlene, Charmaine, Jenny, Ray, David, Stephanie M, and favorite pen-pal, Barbara Manuel, Chads wife, who were all sources of love and support throughout his life.
Elvin is preceded in death by his parents; Stephen and Adeide Fontenot; his wife, Mable Fontenot; his siblings, Burk Lee Fontenot, Gladys Fontenot Young, Cleveland Fontenot, Dorthy F. Deshotel, and Kelly Fontenot; and in-laws, Mildred Manuel, Ruby Fontenot, and Voris Fontenot.
A special thank you to his favorite nurses, Julia Johnson at Stat Home Health and Lorane Patt at Hope Hospice.
Funeral services and ceremonies to honor Elvin Fontenot's life and legacy will be held at Ardoin’s Funeral Home of Mamou on Friday, June 21, 2024, at 2:00 pm with visitations beginning at 9:00 am. A Rosary being prayed in Elvin's honor at 1:30 pm.
Elvin Fontenot will be remembered for his unwavering courage, steadfast integrity, and compassionate heart. His presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and cherished him.
May he rest in peace, knowing that his legacy will endure for generations to come.
