MAMOU It is with great sadness that the family of Donald Mayeux, 93, announces his passing on Saturday June 8, 2013 at Savoy Medical Center in Mamou. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Anns Catholic Church in Mamou at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, June 12, 2013. Rite of Committal will follow in the New St. Anns Mausoleum with Father Mark Melancon Celebrant.
Mr. Mayeux was a retired businessman and active religious and civic leader. He owned and operated the Mamou Wholesale Grocery Co. for 40 years, and had been working for the past 26 years with his son, Attorney Donald L. Mayeux in Eunice.
He was a member of the Board of Directors of Guaranty Bank, and served as VicePres. of the bank and also on the Executive and Loan Committee, as well as Secretary Treasurer of the bank.
He was serving on Bishop Micheal Jarrells Finance Board for the Dioceses of Lafayette, and had been serving under five bishops since 1961. He received the Bishops Devoted Service Award in 2001 for having served 40 years on the Finance Board which began in 1961 as an Advisory Committee now have been serving over 50 years.
Mr. Mayeux served as President of the Evangeline Parish Unit of the American Cancer Society for 27 years, and during this time he also served on the Louisiana State Board for 23 years, and also served on the National Board in New York for four years.
He was the only active Charter member left of the Mamou Rotary Club, which he helped organize in 1950, and served as President 19541955. He remained very active and became known Mr. Rotary.
He served as Rotary District Governors Area Representive, under two governors, for two years.
When LSUE Advisory Committee was first organized in 1973, he served for 21 years until 1994, and served as Chairman of the Committee 19831984. Mr. Mayeux is an LSU Graduate.
Mr. Mayeux received the Man of the Year Civic Award in Mamou in 1958 for his outstanding work in the community.
He was member of the Knights of Columbus in Mamou since 1948, and served as Grand Knight for two years. He served as District Deputy 19581959. He served as Faithful Navigator of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus from 19571958.
He served two years as the first president of the St. Anns Catholic Church Parish Council when it began in 1977. He served as a Lay Minister since 1977 until recently, as well as Lector and Altar Server.
Mr. Mayeux served four years in World War II, and was discharged as a Major. He has been a member of the American Legion since 1946.
A loving father, grandfather and friend he is survived by three sons Donald L. Mayeux and wife, Barbara, of Eunice, Andre Mayeux and wife, Sharon, of Montrose Ca, and Phillip Mayeux, PhD. of Little Rock Ar, one daughter Margaret Kinler and husband, Bob, of Slidell 11 grandchildren, 19 greatchildren and 1 greatgreatgrandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, the former Gladys Guillory, his parents, Mr. Mrs. Aurelis Mayeux, and one greatgrandson, Jacques Mayeux Veillon.
At the request of the family, visitation will be held at Ardoins Funeral Home in Mamou on Tuesday June 11, 2013 from 3:00 pm until 10:00 pm. A Rosary will be recited at 7: 00 pm on Tuesday evening. The Funeral home will reopen on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at 8:00 am until time of services.
